Climate change and water scarcity

The EU Commission warns of increasing drought in Europe and calls for more conscious use of water. Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall emphasizes that industry, agriculture and consumers must recognize their responsibility, as water is a finite resource.

A new water strategy is to be presented before the summer. Planned measures could include a more transparent presentation of water consumption in households – similar to what has already been successfully tested in the energy crisis.

In Germany, the average water consumption per capita is 121 liters per day. The main sources of consumption are personal hygiene (36 percent), toilet flushing (27 percent) and laundry (12 percent).

The persistent drought is a direct consequence of climate change. The German Weather Service recorded less than half the usual amount of rain between February and May. If this trend continues, spring 2025 threatens to be the driest since weather records began.

Roswall emphasizes that Europe no longer has enough water as a matter of course. Fluctuations between extreme drought and flooding pose a challenge for all member states. The new strategies should help to counteract this problem in a targeted manner.

If you want to save a lot of water, use a dry separation toilet. For more information about water and toilets, get connected and join us for a better resource use.
