Global water crisis: “Day Zero Drought” for water supply is approaching

New climate simulations show that several regions of the world are facing a complete collapse of their water supply by 2100 – the so-called “zero hour.” The Mediterranean region, parts of North America, and southern Africa are particularly at risk. Cape Town was already on the brink of this scenario in 2018, when households would have been left without water. A global water crisis would have even more serious consequences, so we must prevent “Day Zero Drought.”

An international research team simulated 100 scenarios based on current climate models. The results show that even with global warming of only 1.5 degrees Celsius, multi-year droughts with extreme evaporation rates can occur. Urban regions with high water consumption, falling river levels, and empty reservoirs are particularly affected.

What does this mean for the future of water supply?

Millions of people could suffer from extreme water shortages as early as the 2020s and 2030s.

Contingency plans, water conservation measures, and rainwater harvesting are essential.

Expanding storage capacities and making efficient use of existing reserves are becoming survival strategies.

The study underscores the urgency of global adaptation strategies. Without far-reaching measures, many regions face an ecological and, consequently, social crisis with far-reaching consequences for health, agriculture, and urban development.
