Drought in Bavaria

Date

The persistent drought in Bavaria is causing increasingly serious problems. It has hardly rained for weeks, which not only drastically reduces the water levels in lakes such as Lake Constance, but also significantly increases the risk of forest fires. This drought is putting a considerable strain on agriculture, as the soil is already showing clear cracks and plants cannot be supplied with sufficient water.

The winter brought a third less precipitation than usual and there is a lack of meltwater from the mountains, as snowfall was particularly low this year. According to the German Weather Service, the dry period between February and April was more extreme than ever before. Regions such as Lower Franconia, Upper Franconia and parts of Swabia are particularly affected, where the effects can be clearly felt.

Experts see these climatic developments as clear signs of climate change, which is increasingly changing Bavaria and other regions. The combination of less precipitation, high temperatures and changing climatic conditions poses considerable challenges for Bavaria.
