How the DAV is preparing Alpine Club huts for the future

The German Alpine Club (DAV) reports that many Alpine Club huts, such as the Neue Prager Hütte, are reaching their limits due to climate change, water shortages, and strict regulations. Shrinking glaciers and longer periods of drought are making traditional sanitation systems increasingly unreliable. That is why the DAV is increasingly turning to waterless solutions to ensure operations even in extreme locations.

Renovations remain challenging: monument protection, fire safety, and limited space make modern conversions difficult. At the same time, requirements for hygiene, energy efficiency, and staff rooms are increasing. The DAV emphasizes that each hut needs individual solution. As logistics, nature conservation, and material transport by helicopter severely limit the scope for action.

Catering is also changing. Meat is difficult to store due to strict cold chains, which is why many huts are switching to more sustainable, vegetarian dishes.

ABEREUS as a key technology in hut operation

The DAV emphasizes that modern dry separation toilets play a key role in reducing water consumption and environmental impact. ABEREUS systems offer robust, waterless sanitation technology that is specially designed for high alpine conditions. Two ABEREUS dry separation toilets have already been successfully installed at the Neue Prager Hütte. So they are ensuring reliable operation despite declining water reserves.
