Saxony faces billions in investments over the next 20 years, with around 34.6 billion euros earmarked for the modernization and climate adaptation of drinking water and wastewater systems. The aim is to make the infrastructure future-proof, climate-resilient and efficient. Around 13.7 billion euros are earmarked for the drinking water supply. Additionally, 20.9 billion euros are for wastewater disposal.

The investments are necessary as many facilities are reaching the end of their service life. At the same time, requirements are increasing due to climate change. This is due to longer dry spells and more frequent heavy rainfall. Around 10-15% of the total sum is earmarked for climate adaptation measures alone.

This results in an investment requirement of around 8,500 euros per inhabitant by 2045, which is slightly below the national average. The costs will be spread over decades. However, a long-term increase in water and wastewater charges is to be expected.

Conclusion for local authorities, suppliers and politicians: without reliable financing prospects, security of supply remains at risk. Now is the time to create sustainable solutions and strengthen water management as a key resource for future generations. Innovative concepts such as dry separation toilets can make an important contribution to relieving the burden on wastewater systems.
