Bottlenecks at rest stops are becoming a safety risk due to the lack of sufficient truck parking spaces in Germany.

The number of trucks on German highways is rising steadily – but the infrastructure is lagging behind. According to current industry analyses, there is a nationwide shortage of around 25,000 parking spaces for trucks at rest stops and truck stops. Especially at night, the available parking spaces are overcrowded. This leads to dangerous evasive maneuvers and illegal parking on entrances and exits.

The federal government is planning to expand. However, approval procedures, land conflicts, and lengthy construction processes are slowing down implementation. Logistics associations and freight forwarders are therefore calling for faster solutions. They suggest digital reservation systems, more efficient use of space, and the involvement of private operators.

Why the issue is relevant:

Overcrowded rest areas jeopardize traffic safety and drivers’ working conditions.

The logistics industry suffers from time pressure and rising operating costs.

Sustainable solutions require political prioritization and cross-sector cooperation.

The truck parking space crisis is an infrastructure bottleneck. It has far-reaching consequences for supply chains, road safety, and the attractiveness of the “professional driver” job profile. Acting today secures mobility tomorrow.
