World Toilet Day 2025 calls for global action with the slogan “We’ll Always Need the Toilet.” The goal is to overcome the sanitation crisis and achieve SDG 6 – water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Around 3.4 billion people still live without access to safe toilets. World Toilet Day on November 19 draws attention to this global inequality. It calls for increased investment in climate-resilient, equitable, and sustainable sanitation systems. Safe sanitation management means that toilets are not shared with other households. Wastewater is either treated on site, stored safely, or connected to functioning sewage treatment plants.
Women, girls, older people, and people with disabilities are particularly affected. Without safe, private, and gender-sensitive toilets, they cannot participate equally in public life. In schools, a lack of sanitation means that girls regularly miss classes, especially during menstruation.
Climate change is exacerbating the situation. Rising sea levels, more frequent flooding, and melting glaciers threaten existing infrastructure. At the same time, poorly managed wastewater systems contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The UN is therefore calling for sustainable sanitation solutions that are resilient, low-emission, and inclusive. It is calling on governments, organizations, and individuals to get actively involved.
