Hot, hotter, hottest: 2024

Date

2024 is projected to be the hottest year on record in Germany since measurements began in 1881. The EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service expects the average global temperature to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the climate crisis. This increase is primarily driven by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, with additional factors like the El Niño weather phenomenon and reduced low-level cloud cover contributing.

The German Weather Service (DWD) confirms that 2024 will be the warmest year since records began, underscoring the urgent need for ambitious climate protection measures. Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, emphasizes the importance of immediate and aggressive climate action to mitigate global warming impacts.

Rising temperatures bring broader implications, including more frequent and intense weather extremes, and highlight the need for global cooperation to achieve the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.
