Projects involving service water, “Nutzwasser”, and water reuse are setting new standards for resource-efficient water use in urban areas. The aim is to use treated wastewater as an alternative source of irrigation for green spaces. To this end, Schweinfurt’s municipal wastewater treatment plant is testing state-of-the-art processes for advanced water treatment to ensure maximum microbiological safety and water quality.

Innovative water reuse for sustainable urban irrigation in Schweinfurt

This development is particularly crucial for regions such as Schweinfurt on the Franconian dry plateau. Geologically induced water scarcity and increasing periods of drought pose major challenges for urban drainage. By integrating reclaimed water solutions, Schweinfurt can irrigate green spaces sustainably and reduce drinking water consumption. This also enables the city to take on a pioneering role in adapting to climate change. The project, which is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment, demonstrates in a practical way how such concepts can be applied beyond the local level. Other municipalities should also benefit from the experience gained. Scientific partners such as the Technical University of Munich and the TZW are developing standards for hygiene, environmental compatibility, and acceptance. Water recycling should be designed to be safe and efficient.

These approaches make an important contribution to the circular economy and ensure ecological balance in water-scarce regions. If you would like to learn more about these and other projects, stay curious and follow us, thereby contributing to a better resource use.
