Water and gender

Weltwassertag 2026: Wasser und Geschlecht steht über einem Foto, wo ein junges Mädchen in der Hocke an einer Wasserstelle Geschirr putzt. An der Pfütze ist auch ein Hahn und man erkennt Müll.

Where water flows, equality grows—but only if we all take action.

March 22 is World Water Day 2026. This year’s theme hits a nerve:
The global water crisis is also a women’s crisis.

📊 Some facts that should shake us awake:

  • Over 1 billion women worldwide have no access to clean drinking water.
  • Women and girls spend 250 million hours a day collecting water – three times more than men.
  • In 14% of countries, there are no mechanisms for women’s equal participation in water policy.

The solution? Women must be visible and heard as engineers, scientists, leaders, and decision-makers in water management—not just as those affected.

Water is a human right. So is equality.
