On April 1, 2026, the Artemis 2 mission successfully launched from the Kennedy Space Center. For the first time in over half a century, humans are once again on their way to the Moon. But shortly after liftoff, an unexpected problem arose—and, of all places, in the bathroom.
The mission is the first to send the so-called Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) beyond low Earth orbit. Just a few hours after launch, the fan in the urine collection system jammed. Ground control and the crew were able to resolve the issue together. Shortly before bedtime, astronaut Christina Koch asked how things were going. NASA’s response was brief: “The toilet can be used throughout the night.”
But that wasn’t all: In the days that followed, the four astronauts had trouble flushing the stored urine into space—possibly due to a clogged filter caused by a chemical reaction that remains unexplained. Additionally, a strange burning smell was reported coming from the toilet, though this did not cause further concern for mission control.
The high-tech toilet in the Orion capsule cost $23 million and took six years to develop—featuring 3D-printed titanium components. We reported on this back in March. By comparison: Our dry separation toilets require no water, no multi-million-dollar budget, and no mission control—and reliably separate solids and liquids, no matter where on Earth.
What was it like on previous missions? Were there toilet issues back then?
During the Apollo missions, there were neither toilets nor a separate restroom area—the crews used waste bags back then. The new toilet thus represents a significant technical advancement. The fact that even this advancement still has its pitfalls shows once again: The toilet issue is one of the most persistent engineering challenges—whether on the moon or even on Earth, for example in alpine terrain.
